❓ FAQ

Why deduct inflation? Isn't gold price alone what matters?
Because 10,000 pounds from 5 years ago purchasing power is much higher than 10,000 pounds today. If your gold rose from 10K to 15K, it looks like 50% gain. But Egypt's inflation made 10K = 25K today in purchasing power, so you actually lost.
What's the difference between "apparent gain" & "real gain"?
Apparent = difference between your purchase price & today's selling price (ignoring inflation). Real = same difference but after deducting inflation's impact on money's purchasing power.
What exactly is "breakeven point"?

Simple definition: Breakeven is the gold price per gram where, if market price reaches it, you recover everything you paid (gold + craftsmanship) with zero profit or loss.

Practical example:

  • I bought 10g of 21K gold at 3,000 L.E./gram = 30,000 L.E.
  • Paid 7% craftsmanship = 2,100 L.E. extra
  • Total I paid = 32,100 L.E.
  • Breakeven = 32,100 ÷ 10 = 3,210 L.E./gram

Meaning gold must rise from 3,000 to 3,210 (7% increase) for you to just recover your money. Any increase above = real profit.

Why higher than purchase price? Because the craftsmanship you paid is lost — next buyer won't buy from you with craftsmanship, only raw gold. So gold price must rise to compensate.

Smart indicator: If current price above breakeven = you're gaining. If Below it = If you sell now, you'll lose. The calculator shows you How many years approximately to reach it based on gold's historical average growth.

Are the numbers 100% accurate?
Very close but indicative. Gold price is live and precise (from global market). Inflation rate is estimated (based on annual averages, may differ from your personal situation).
Why is craftsmanship fee important?
When you buy finished gold (chain, ring, set), the seller adds a "craftsmanship fee" on top of gold weight. When you sell, the buyer pays only raw gold price without the fee. So it's lost money forever.
Can I save my previous calculations?

📚 Data Sources

We prioritize full transparency. Here are the sources the calculator uses for each figure:

🥇
Live gold price (XAU/USD)
from fawazahmed0/currency-api via jsDelivr CDN. Updated daily from multiple central banks. Free, open-source, CORS-enabled.
📜
Historical gold prices
Annual averages from World Gold Council and LBMA Gold Price. We use the year's average to estimate the gram price at purchase time.
💱
Live exchange rates
14 Arab currencies vs USD, from the same source (fawazahmed0). Updated daily. FALLBACK_RATES in the code is a backup if the API fails.
📉
Inflation rates
Official annual data from International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank. For each country, we calculate the average inflation between purchase and today.
🔧
Average craftsmanship fees
Estimates from daily gold price tracking sites in each country (e.g., gold.sa for Saudi Arabia and Egyptian gold division price sites). As a percentage of gram price per carat. You can adjust manually.
📐
Historical gold growth rate
8% annually (long-term average) — based on 50 years of gold performance according to World Gold Council. We use it only to calculate "when will you break even" — not a guaranteed forecast.

⚠️ Transparency Note: Historical local gold price is calculated from USD price × estimated exchange rate (daily historical rates are hard to access publicly). For high-inflation countries (Egypt, Lebanon, Yemen) there may be 5-15% variance from actual purchase price — but the final result (post-inflation) remains accurate because it's based on your actual payment amount.
